SOC wins British Orienteering Award

By Webmaster , 19 April, 2025

Southampton Orienteering Club has been awarded British Orienteering's "Respect the Environment" award. The nomination came from Emma Monkman, Access and Environment Officer at the national federation. The award is in recognition of the club's work to protect the natural environment in the New Forest.

Forestry England provided the following quote in support of the nomination:

Julian Hartwell orienteering in the New Forest

"Forestry England Southern Permissions team have successfully worked with Southampton Orienteering Club for several years. Acting as the New Forest Orienteering co-ordinator Julian has been an integral part of the planning of many events on New Forest land.

The New Forest is heavily protected, which means that we have important conservation obligations including legal duties on the amount and types of activities that can take place here. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area for Birds, a Special Area of Conservation and a Ramsar site. Due to all these protections, the district undertakes Habitats Regulation Assessments (HRA) of its permissible activities, and work to ensure there is no significant harm or impact to protected habitat and wildlife.

Southampton Orienteering Club have always adhered to the HRA in the planning of their own events and of others wishing to use the New Forest. As the Activites and Permissions manager I feel they have set a ‘Gold Standard’ of how Southern Permissions aspire to work with other Orienteering clubs. Julian has worked closely with Forestry England to understand our ecology restrictions and he always ensures these are communicated positively back to the event organisers he coordinates."

I hope everyone enjoyed the first of our Summer Series for 2025. Many thanks to Steve Pullen for organising, and Ian Moran for planning. Entries for our next event at Queen Elizabeth Country Park on 3rd May are already open on Racesignup. Why not try something a bit different and also enter our MapRun league? These score events can be done at any time during the month, and use a mobile phone app to verify that you've visited the controls.

Summer Series

Southampton Orienteering Club's Summer Series is returning this year, with five fun Saturday events from April - August. These events are a perfect introduction to orienteering for newcomers, for families looking for a day out together, for those looking to improve their orienteering skills, and for experienced orienteers too.

There are five events in SOC's 2025 Summer Series, details of which can be found below. Click on each link to find details about each event, and enter to guarantee a place on the course you would like to run.

Each event will have three courses on offer: a short (Yellow), medium (Orange) and long (Green, or as near to it as the area allows).

This year, we will be running a league for each course over the 5 events.  This will be based on the 2 best scores for the Yellow and Orange courses and the best 3 for the Green course. Points will be given according to your finishing position.

Perhaps some competitors will want to move up to a more technical course at some stage, but points will not be transferable from course to course.

Results:

All 3 courses were keenly contested over the 5 events with the winners not being decided until the final day.

Congratulations to our winners:

  • Hard Course, best 3 runs – 1st Paul Thwaites, 2nd David Currie.
  • Medium Course, best 2 runs – 1st Kate Gedny, 2nd Claire Thwaites.
  • Easy Course, best 2 runs – Georgia Jones, Rufus and Felix Bracher shared the honours, showing great promise for the future.

In all 113 runners competed in at least one of the events. Many thanks to all Mappers, Organisers, Planners, Download Leads and all helpers for their contribution to an enjoyable series of events. Thanks also to Pete Davis for dealing with entries for the series and also to Julian Hartwell for handling permissions throughout.
