Going for Gold in Colden Common?

Profile picture for user Helen Wheelwright
By Helen Wheelwright , 15 May, 2022

It was good to see so many people completing Steve Pullen's latest MapRun around Winchester.

The action has now moved to Colden Common where Rachel's course has already received several plaudits. If you would like to see other runners, come along to the car park off St Vigor Way, SO21 1UU on this coming Thursday, 19th May at 6.30. The post run social will take place in The Rising Sun pub, 27, Spring Lane, Colden Common, SO21 1SB from 7.30 pm.

If you are thinking it is too late to take part in the league, think again. Colden Common is the fourth in the league so you will still be able to get five runs in even if you are just starting this week. All welcome, SOC members and non-SOC members alike.

AGM Roundup

By Webmaster , 13 May, 2022

The full minutes will follow but the following is a quick round-up of last night's AGM. Di Smith, Bernie Newitt, and Andrew Nash, were elected as Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer respectively. They will join Colin Hicks, Mark Light, Terry Smith, and Helen Wheelwright, who were re-elected as committee members.

Trophies were awarded for the Club Champs as previously advertised. Fighting off stiff competition, Andrew Nash won The Pits for an unfortunate incident where odds and evens were confused with 80s and 90s (it's all in the telling!). Helen Wheelwright was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution award for her work with the Saturday Series, Find Your Way, and more. Most Improved Senior went to Tamsin Moran for her post-injury comeback, and Most Improved Junior went jointly to Emma and Duncan Currie.

The evening concluded with a testing quiz, compered by Veronica Barrette and fueled by Barbara's catering and Mark Light's homebrew!

Robert Jackson obituary

Profile picture for user Julian Hartwell
By Julian Hartwell , 9 May, 2022

The following is a short obituary received from Robert's family. Robert's funeral will take place at 10.00 on Friday 27th May at St John's Boldre.

Robert Kenneth Jackson

Former Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Southampton General Hospital
(b 1933; q Cambridge/St Thomas’ Hospital 1958; MA, FRCS) died 29th April 2022

After National Service in the Royal Airforce he trained in orthopaedics under Prof. James in Edinburgh. This was followed by a fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and then two years as Chief Assistant to Ronnie Furlong at St Thomas’s. In 1971 he was appointed consultant in Southampton and at the Treloar Orthopaedic in Alton. His specialist interest was children’s orthopaedics and scoliosis surgery. He set up a scoliosis service on the south coast and was a founder member of the British Scoliosis Society and later its President.

Throughout his 25 years as a consultant surgeon, he was an incredibly keen and active member of the Southampton Orienteering Club. Spending many years as club chairman, he orienteered throughout the UK and abroad, competing in events as far afield as what was then, Czechoslavakia.

In retirement, he was Chairman of the British Scoliosis Research Foundation and the Lymington Hospital League of Friends. A mountaineer and orienteer all his life, he was also Churchwarden at St Johns, Boldre for 11 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Maggie and leaves two children and five grandchildren.
