Coaching in Bramshaw Woods on Saturday 29th October

Profile picture for user Helen Wheelwright
By Helen Wheelwright , 11 October, 2022

This will be a chance for SOC members to do a group walk around the Short Green course from the recent Bramshaw event in the company of a qualified coach. If you missed the event, this is a chance to experience what you missed and if you were there, this is a chance to have a go in slow time and consider and discuss what techniques you could best use to crack this tricky area. If you have a Short Green course map, please bring it along. If not paper copies in a plastic wallet will be available from the coach.

Please park and meet up at Shepards Gutter car park, grid reference SU262153 on Furzley Road, just past the Bramble Hill Hotel.

The activity will run from 10.30 till 12.30 approx. There are 5 places available for SOC members. For further information or to sign up please contact Helen on helenamandaaa [at] gmail.com (helenamandaaa[at]gmail[dot]com)

Planner's comments

Thanks for coming along to the SOC Level D at Bramshaw on such a glorious Autumn day. Bramshaw South - last used for the November Classic in 2019 - is one of the more technical areas of the New Forest and provides plenty of scope for challenging navigation. The courses planned offered opportunities to practise different techniques in the varied terrain. The bracken in some areas made it hard to discern "clearings", and perhaps the courses may have been a tad long, but from the feedback at download most competitors enjoyed the challenge.

Thanks to those who supported my planning - the forest team for hanging and collecting and all those who gave up their time to support in some way or another in the run-up to the event and on the day.

Organiser's comments

What can I say? It was a glorious and memorable day and I am so glad that so many competitors turned up and enjoyed the event. I would just like to add my thanks to our SOC team who turned up to help-with good humour and flexibility and initiative and especially to Julia Loring, the main organiser who put most of the hard work in prior to the day.

Look forward to seeing you all at the November Classic on Sunday 6th of next month.

Thoroughly enjoyed the green…

Thoroughly enjoyed the green course Lisa well done on the planning-caught me out totally on the shortest leg! It shows the need for total concentration. We did manage to use the area once since the Classic in 2019 for a closed club event during the rigours of covid with 30 orienteers in the morning and another 30 in the afternoon. But it was great to get back to the area with a proper event with 100 competitors from a great venue. Thanks to Nick Bosbury for suggesting the village hall, following the cutback by Forestry England of the public car parks that are deemed suitable for orienteering events.

SCOA Update

Profile picture for user Ian Moran
By Ian Moran , 2 October, 2022

The South Central Orienteering Association (SCOA) is made of the clubs in the region covering Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, southern Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, South Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. SCOA pools the resources of the region’s clubs in order to provide coaching for juniors, training for officials, coordinate fixtures, organise our largest events, and generally support orienteering within the region.

Junior Squad

2022 JIRCS was held in Northern Ireland. Duncan Currie was the sole SOC representative. The SCOA men’s relay team came in third place behind two Scottish teams which is an excellent result. The results for the event can be found here.

It is hoped to have a training session in the New Forest during the weekend of the November Classic.

SCOA Championships

Mappers now get points towards the championships, similar to organisers and planners who have qualified for some time now. This acknowledges that event officials cannot score through competing at events at which they are officiating.

Senior Home Internationals 5th to 6th November 2022

The relay area will be held on Saturday at Hogmoor, near Bordon and the individual will take place alongside the Club’s November Classic, so we can expect to see some of the country’s best orienteers attending. We might even have a current world champion taking part. 60 to 70 competitors are expected from the four nations.

 British Championships 2023 25-26th March 2023

To be hosted by SCOA at Hambledon and Cold Ash. This is a SCOA event, so all SCOA clubs are encouraged to provide personnel to help at the events, so please put the date in your diary.

SCOA league

The 2021/22 season prize giving is scheduled for event 2; the BADO event at Micheldever on 23rd October 2022. The 2022/23 season currently has 5 events registered.
