Julian was captured by the event photographer at the at the Guildford Orienteers recent middle distance event, the picture and more information on the event here: https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/5049. (Page down to get to the article).

Serves as a reminder that we have the club's first middle distance event on Saturday 29th February 2020. As a local event we are having a cut down range of courses but it will provide some challenging competition in the seldom visited Mark Ash Wood

JK Relay Entries: plea for competitors!

Profile picture for user Christine Currie
By Christine Currie , 8 February, 2020

SOC will be fielding relay teams at the JK competition held annually over the Easter weekend (https://www.thejk.org.uk/jk2020/). This year it's being held in the North East, so not the closest event to get to for SOC members! Nonetheless, it ranks alongside the British Championships as one of the most prestigious events of the UK orienteering calendar.

If you would like to be a member of a SOC relay team at the JK, please let me know by the end of February. If you have any preference over which course you run, I will do my best to accommodate requests.

Thanks

Christine (christine [at] curries.org.uk (christine[at]curries[dot]org[dot]uk))

For the experienced among…

For the experienced among you do come and try some loops on a blue/brown only map.

This concentrates the mind on recognising the shape of the land and the water features, besides improving compass and pacing skills. Why do this? Firstly the shape of the land and the more prominent water features stay the same. Secondly being only blue and brown it stops total reliance on using on vegetation and path/track network, which do change over time, thus adding another useful skill to your "toolbox of techniques" Colin H.
