Shawford and Twyford MapRun December 2023

The activity will be available in the MapRun app from Thursday 7th December for six months. If you wish to compare notes on the course, please complete the activity before the social on 14th December.

Location: The start is outside Compton Parish Hall and the finish is in The Bridge pub car park. There is parking available on the streets around Shawford as well in the car park alongside Shawford Down and outside the Platform 1 café. If you intend to use The Bridge pub then you can use their car park.

Format: 45 minutes, 30 controls. Points are 10, 20, or 30 per control: 10 points for 1 - 10, 20 points for 11 to 20, and 30 points for 21 to 30, for a maximum of 600 points. There is a penalty of 10 points per minute late back or part thereof.

MapRun app: Use the MapRun6 or MapRun7 app. When navigating to the event, select UK > Southampton > Shawford and Twyford 2023 PXAS ScoreN45. See the MapRun website for guidance on configuring your phone.

Map: The map is a 1:7500 OpenOrienteeringMap.

Terrain: The course is in two main areas. The first is to the west of the motorway and is mainly on residential roads and paths. There is a steep climb up Shawford Down to access this area. The second area is mainly across the Twyford water meadows as well as on residential streets and paths in Twyford.

Safety: All people doing this MapRun activity in the evening must wear hi-vis, a headtorch, and bring a spare torch or batteries. There are a few busy roads on the course. Please take care when crossing them and try to do so via the underpass close to control 28 or road bridge near control 16. Please be careful if using the path between controls 21 and 27 as there is a shin height obstruction halfway along the path. There is an unmade path alongside the Itchen Navigation between controls 1 and 6 but this doesn’t show up on the map. Please be careful if you use this path - watch where you put your feet and don't fall in. Under 16's should be accompanied by an adult. All fences are not to be climbed whether marked on the map or not.
