SOC MapRun League

Welcome to Southampton Orienteering Club's 2021 Summer MapRun League. The League will run for ten weeks between July and September with your best three results out of five counting towards the league. A new event will be added every other Saturday and you have sixteen days in which to compete. Events will stay open beyond that date but will not count towards the league. As long as you observe any restrictions, feel free to organise to run at the same time as your club mates or friends. The League is free to take part and is open to club members and anyone local. There will be 50 points for the winner each event, 49 for second-placed, etc. with everyone who participates getting at least one point.

MapRun is a form of orienteering where you use an app to record whether you have successfully navigated your way around a course and your times. There won't be any flags or physical controls out but you will receive positive confirmation from the app that you are in the right place. Please see the MapRun website for more info. The latest app is MapRun6 which is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The older version MapRunF will work for all the courses but the developer will phase it out at some point. If you have a modern Garmin watch, you can also get MapRunG installed on it.

League guidelines:

  • Your first attempt counts for the League (but you are welcome to do it more than once and try to improve). 
  • Avoid looking at the maps and planning your route before you start. Part of the challenge is to plan your route under time pressure!
  • No studying the tracks of other people before you run. That is cheating! 
  • Obey all relevant and current government rules regarding travel and meeting in groups.
