British Long & Relay Champs 21st-22nd March

SOC needs you!

The British Long Distance and Relay Champs weekend is the 21-22 March. The weekend is being held near Liphook, Hampshire. As the event is very local this year, it would be great to have a really big SOC turnout for both days of this event.

I am coordinating relay teams for SOC (we already have 14 orienteers keen, almost 5 teams). Relays are teams of 3. If you've not run a relay before, they are good fun. The first person starts more like a normal running race but the courses you run have "forking" - with everyone running slightly different variations of the same course. In some ways, this makes the navigation easier as there is more likely to be people around!

More info on the website here.

Why you should sign up:

  • New area for orienteering (apparently excellent!)
  • <60mins drive from Southampton
  • Similar Southern Forest to what we're all used to!
  • SOC will pay the relay entry fee this year (previously paid half)
  • Sociable fun day for the Club

First entry deadline for the individual races (which are the day before) are the this Sunday 26th January, so get your individual entries in now for the cheapest entry then...

Please let me know if you'd like to run in a relay team.

We'll aim to take advantage of the early cheaper deadline, so please respond as soon as possible and ideally by Saturday 22nd February.

Looking forward to it,

By Helen Wheelwright , 21 January, 2020

The draw has taken place for the CS trophy and we will be competing at Coopers Hill and Cranham near Gloucester.

We have a pretty strong team . Thank you to those who have signed up already.

I have expressed our initial interest so we will definitely be taking part. However if there are any other SOC orienteers who would also like to run for the club it is not too late. Please contact me on helenamandaaa [at] gmail.com (helenamandaaa[at]gmail[dot]com)

if you would like to sign up.

I need to send my completed spreadsheet to Andy Mc Gregor by 25th February. So please, for those interested in running, if you have not already done so, could you give me the following info:

  1. Forename and surname
  2. BOF number
  3. Age class
  4. SIAC or SI ? And the number please.

For those of you who are not sure if you will be fit/ available by 25th Feb, I am allowed to make additions and subtractions to our team up until 9th March.

Best Wishes

Helen Wheelwright

Wet and windy MapRun

By Webmaster , 17 January, 2020

A hardy crew braved the wind and rain for last night's MapRun around the streets of Eastleigh. Everyone was glad of the chance to dry out in the pub afterwards. Many thanks to Christine for planning. If you missed it, it's not too late to give it a go! Just download the free MapRun app (available on Android and iOS), select the event from UK > Southampton > Eastleigh, and head to the start. If you want to print yourself a map, the PDF is available here. Watch this space for details of next month's MapRun.
